News backends

Jack your brain right into the raw dataflow... Erm, ok hook your application up to the raw desktopian.org headlines backend <g>. We've got them in two flavors:

'recentnews.txt' is the older system and is still maintained for backward compatibility with existing news-gathering applications. The XML files, on the other hand, are definitely the wave of the future, a much better way to design your news backend or gathering app down the road.

It's well beyond my meager abilities to discuss the advantages of XML, but suffice it to say that it's a very flexible web-compatible data-encapsulation format (a bit like csv for the web, for you database types), that isolates the data from it's presentation (the data is stored in 'data islands' within an html doc, or as separate files, and is presented and formatted utilizing cascading style sheets). For this news-gathering application, it simply provides news-gathering apps with a solid cross-platform, easy-to-use formated headlines file.

News Trackers

Applications which can help you track our headlines range from scripts to full applications to server-based html news-aggregation pages. These utilize a variety of text-based, RSS, XML, Scripting News & OCS-formated backends, and I have full write-ups available on my News Trackers page.
